Terms of use

About these terms

StageCommons is run by The Northern Rep Company Ltd, a not-for-profit company registered in England and Wales (company number 17542164). These terms apply when you create an account or download a script. By doing either, you agree to them.

What you can do with our scripts

Every play on StageCommons is, to the best of our knowledge, out of copyright in the UK. You can read, copy, rehearse and perform it, for free or for profit, without paying us or anyone else.

Our own work on each script, such as the layout, corrections, cuts and arrangements, belongs to The Northern Rep Company. You are welcome to copy it for your own readings, rehearsals and productions. Please do not republish our editions, sell them or offer them for download elsewhere without asking us first.

A credit such as “Script from StageCommons” in your programme is appreciated but not required.

Checking the rights

We check each play carefully before we publish it, and each play page shows what we checked. But copyright can be complicated, records can be wrong, and the law can change. We cannot guarantee that any play is free of all rights, and scripts are provided as they are.

Before you perform, it is your responsibility to make sure you are free to do so. Take particular care if:

  • you are performing outside the UK, where copyright rules can differ
  • you use a different translation, adaptation or edition from ours
  • you add music, songs or other material to the play

If there is a rights concern

If you think a play on StageCommons is still in copyright, or a rights holder contacts you about one, please stop using it and email us at hello@stagecommons.co.uk. We will look into it promptly and remove the play while we do.

Our liability

StageCommons is a free service. As far as the law allows, The Northern Rep Company is not responsible for any loss or cost that comes from using the site or its scripts. This includes licence fees, legal costs, cancelled or changed performances and lost income.

If we are found responsible for any loss despite this, our total liability to you is limited to £100.

Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not allow us to limit.

Your account

Please keep your account details accurate. We may close an account that is used to misuse the site, for example to copy the whole library for another website.

Changes and law

We may update these terms from time to time, and the date below shows the latest version. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales.
